Investigative Interviewing

Develop the skills required to perform structured and thorough interviews with a range of different witnesses during an investigation into any safety or quality incident, HR investigation, internal enquiry or equipment failure.

The course uses an operational scenario to facilitate a variety of inputs and practical exercises that cumulatively deliver a highly realistic training experience.

Who should attend
This course is designed for any staff who will be involved in carrying out interviews and noting statements from witnesses during an investigation on behalf of their organisation, and for root cause analysis practitioners keen to enhance their interviewing skills.

Content

Witness categories – understanding the different types of witnesses and how to encourage their cooperation

Interview planning – using any evidence already obtained as a planning tool for an effective interview.

The PRISM model – introducing a structured process for carrying out an actual interview with a witness.

Types of questions – knowledge relating to what both good and bad questions look like, and when to use the different types of good questions.

Listening and body language – how to use effective listening skills and positive body language to encourage witness cooperation

Noting statements – how to note detailed and structured witness statements.

Scenario exercise – interactive scenario where delegates will interview witnesses based on a real life investigation scenario.
